The statistics are in and the results are shocking. 87% of employees feel disconnected and unhappy at work. Forbes magazine details that unhappy employees outnumber happy ones by two to one, worldwide.
What this is telling us is that the majority of people don’t like their jobs. We’ve all been there, some of us still are. The big question is: how do you turn this around for yourself? It isn’t simply about switching your role, company or career, though this could make a small difference. It begins with how you view yourself and the choices that you make.
Prioritize
When was the last time that you took stock of what is truly important to you? Whether it’s making time for family and friends or investing in a hobby that you enjoy – dedicate time every week. Look at it as an investment – in yourself. When you have something to look forward to or fond memories to re-live, your work week will become lighter and more exciting as well.
Happiness is a decision
Did you know that you could alter your life simply by altering your attitude? Psycho-social studies report that a little effort can go a long way. Deciding to be happy should be the first and most important decision you make. If we are in a good place emotionally, then work flows smoothly and success comes naturally. It’s a small thought that can be implemented every day to achieve new levels of contentment.
The company you keep
Surround yourself by people you like and respect. While it isn’t always possible to choose your colleagues, you can create a niche pocket of familiarity and low-drama within your peers at work. If you’re in a position where you can choose the teams you work with, great. If not then spend time identifying and aligning with those who match your values and work ethic. Once you do that, any task you take on will become infinitely more enjoyable.
Growth
Every situation has opportunity for growth. Don’t be deterred by a task that seems challenging or beyond your boundaries. These are the moments that define our level of self-worth. Determine what pushes you to grow and learn, then pursue it. Accomplishing something that seems beyond your reach will bring an immense amount of optimism.
Strengths
Negativity tends to push focus towards our deficiencies. The daily rhetoric that runs through your head can often be one of ‘I can’t do this, I’m not worthy’. Try focusing on your strengths instead. What are you capable of? What makes you feel productive and engaged?
Look to the things that you enjoy and you will find a place to utilize your strengths.
Help Others
Studies have actually proven that if we focus our thoughts on altruistic goals, we will increase our own happiness. The workplace is often a self-indulgent, self-serving melee. You can change this by allocating value upon others – which will ultimately increase your own self worth, creating what best-selling self-help author Stephen Covey calls a ‘win-win paradigm’
Sometimes we may have to endure periods of frustration to reach our long-term goals. However happiness at work and a successful career depend entirely on your own actions and outlook. Subscribe to success by fielding a positive attitude and then create the ability to see past any challenges that may arise.
