Sam walks into a room with a straight face. No hint of a smile. A bit of a sigh as he sits down in front of his peers. Virtually no eye contact.
Greg walks into a room, makes eye contact with everyone, smiles, says hello, asks how everyone is doing, maybe even chuckles here and there.
Based on those two scenarios, who would you rather meet?
Poor communication is definitely one of the top reasons a company can be torn apart. If the quality and the quantity of communication is poor between colleagues, this can have a direct effect on efficiency, productivity, and the bottom line. If there is a lack of communication between leadership and their teams, things can get even worse. Why is communication so important?
A wise person once said to me, that you can only control what you can control. This statement resonates with me, and it should resonate with everyone because it’s pretty much a fact. The sad truth is that things will happen in life that are out of your control. The only thing you can control is how you react and manage it. One of the most difficult things HR professionals (and managers in general) face in the office, is figuring out how to approach tragedies the right way. As we all know, even during the toughest tragedies, work is work, and somehow we need to keep things going.

Last week we started talking about diversity, and the importance of diversity in the hiring process. We are all individuals with different personalities, and those personality traits start to show when we’re put in teams and forced to work together. Certain people emerge as leaders, other focus on analyzing, and so on and so on.
To expand on this topic of diversity, we’re now going to talk about cultural diversity in the workplace.
Diversity, is simply defined as, "a range of different things." In the workplace, however, diversity describes our culture, our skills, and our roles. Imagine if there are three different types of people in this world. We’ll call these people, X’s, Y’s, and Z’s.
Have you ever tried to figure out employee motivation? Think about the last team meeting you had, and how you motivated your team. Think back and remember what you said in that meeting. Now, think about the results from that meeting. Was your pep talk a success?
You may find that employee motivation isn't the same for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are the CEO of a five person startup, or a global company of 1,000, employees may not always be motivated by the exact same thing. Pep talks, are one of them. So how do you figure this out and keep every single person on your roster motivated?

We’re about four full months into the year, and while it doesn’t seem like much, a lot of what you do in the first quarter will set the tone for the rest of the year, especially in regards to company culture. Bad habits pile up quick and before you know it you’re going down that slippery slope of poor company culture, which can increase turnover, create distance between leadership and staff, and potentially hurt the company financially.

These days, we no longer discuss new businesses as new businesses. Every new business is now a “startup.” I guess to most, a startup often refers to a technology company, founded by a couple people or less, that has potential to bring in large amounts of investment capital and can scale quickly. The term is used so often now to categorize new businesses, that we’ve even coined up the hashtag, #StartupLife, which is now tagged 377,329 times on Instagram alone. I can’t go a day without seeing someone, somewhere, say or use the term “Startup Life.”
